Last week’s field trip to the pumpkin patch was a lesson on public transportation: bus-BART-bus. Students could get as big a pumpkin as they could carry back on bus-BART-bus-walk. One student barely made it back, but he carried it all the way by himself!👍😅

We offered Free Academic Assessment for 3-6 graders last Sat. A dozen Chinese students from SF west side public schools came. Results were sobering: in both Math and English, virtually all were multiple grades behind. More free sessions. Signup link: tinyurl.com/BHAFreeTest

Everyday we have “Chinese Cultural Gem” time when we learn a Chinese idiom. Thousands of years of Chinese history, culture and wisdom are captured in these countless 4-character sayings. Weekend homework includes writing about their favorite idiom from the week.

We went on a field trip to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue where our students met and learned about senior dogs, helped change some blankets and walked a few dogs down the block.

BHA held our first Winter Recital to celebrate the conclusion of our first semester! Students sang “Descendants of the Dragon” (龙的传人), followed by piano solos, recitation of “Three Character Classic” (三字经) and Tang Dynasty poems (唐诗), and concluded with “Deck the Hall!”

Morning Exercise has turned into Morning Workout. Under the direction of Coach Allen, our students not only learned to use weights and pull-up bars, they began to run around the school block. “Summer bodies are built in the winter!”

While San Franciscans vote to bring Algebra back to 8th grade at SFUSD, our individualized learning lets every one of our students learn math at their own pace under the 1-in-1 guidance of teachers. Many of our students will be learning Algebra in their 6th grade!

Our morning exercise is no joke! Over the past 8 weeks, students trained every day to be able to do this. This gives them evidence and confidence that continuous hard work will build strong muscles both in their bodies and their minds!
