This week our lab had a double celebration: 1) Eva’s election into the Royal Society and 2) Zhenlin’s new job in Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China SUSTech 南方科技大学. He will be missed but we wish him success and joy in his independent career!

Congrats to MCB's Eva Nogales on her election to the Fellowship of the Royal Society! 👏🎉 The Royal Society The Nogales Lab royalsociety.org/news/2025/05/n…

Excited to share our new paper in Molecular Cell! Congratulation to the transcription team Francesca Burgos Bravo AlexTong, ChenLi, CDDC and our fantastic collaborators Danny Reinberg & Kaplan labs! The Bustamante Lab #Transcription #Chromatin #SingleMolecule #OpticalTweezers #FACT

Congratulations to our grad students Rachael McMinimy and Chris Padovani, who yesterday received their degrees from UC Berkeley UC Berkeley MCB! Thank you for everything, and we will miss you!!!

Big congrats to grad students Claire Goul Claire Goul and Julian Yano Julian Yano on earning their PhDs from UC Berkeley MCB. Greater adventures await you!

Excited to share this piece I wrote for Asimov Press with all of you on how evolutionary solutions to defense and counter-defense in the form of toxic proteins and peptides have been and could been co-opted by us as new drugs.

Thrilled this paper is out! We solved the first cocrystal structure of FSP1 with an inhibitor (FSEN1), providing mechanistic insight & a foundation for medchem. Led by amalia megarioti & Sitao Zhang. A terrific collaboration with Da Jia. Brief Tweetorial! 1/9 pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…

Check out our pre-print on ProteinGuide, a new method for conditioning protein generative models on experimental data! Thanks to the amazing team: Junhao (Bear) Xiong, Hunter, Jennifer Listgarten, Ishan Gaur and Luke Oltrogge! Savage Lab

New UC Berkeley research! The Corey Bryant and Sunnyjoy Dupuis, PhD reveal that algae remember light stress from the day and prep for it at night—like a cellular slumber party with global CO₂ implications. Read more about the new study in The Plant Cell: bit.ly/QB3_algae
