This is a fascinating study, and lots of cool studies on LLMs in Games. My main concern is that none of these decisions are incentive compatible. In other words they are hypothetical. The question is can there be incentive compatible experiments for LLMs (right now)?

The recent advances in AI has given me a feeling of anxiety I haven't had before. There are about to be some large disruptions to society/institutions. On one hand, the potential welfare gains are exciting.....but I could also see it all going to shit!

FWIW, Vernon Smith was awarded the Econ Nobel in 2002 for running experiments and proving that it didn't take much to get to competitive markets.

The cool thing about being an Experimental Economist is that we do test the validity of economic theories (and models of human behaviour) in the lab! 1) Experiments are important! 2) That's why we do them!

💡Leading researchers and AI companies have raised the possibility that AI models could soon be sentient. I’m worried that too few people are thinking about this. Let’s change that. I’m excited to announce a Digital Sentience Consortium. Check out these funding opps.👇

Suppose that in the future newer models were used, with non-fake citations. You can always find at least one study that supports whatever wacky view. Heck, you could have AI design a bad study to cite. We're going to need new ways of evaluating and constraining bad takes.

Incorporating informative Bayesian priors into impact evaluation offers the ability to learn more from experiments. Leonardo Iacovone, early modern boy-actress (they/them) & David McKenzie demonstrate how to do this in the context of a Colombian exporting experiment. econometricsociety.org/publications/e…

My biggest spending habit is on a deep tissue massage every couple of weeks. It has such a large impact on my wellbeing. Highly recommend it to anyone working a job where they sit most of the day.

I'm really sad that Global Priorities Institute is shutting its doors soon. A unique institute in how it motivated big research questions in phil, econ, and psych. I owe a lot of my academic journey to GPI! Also, their econ pre-doc program was incredible. Constantly had great placements.

Burden of proof. In science where it falls represents a key consideration. Consider external validity. Back in the 1990s, in experimental economics Vernon Smith's "parallelism" shifted the burden of proof to the detractor. Today, the burden of proof in experimental economics
