This 2010 piece by Nathan Rabin, from The A.V. Club, got me into Toby Keith - and I'm glad it did. (Nathan's entire Nashville or Bust series is worth reading. It made me a country music nut, and I've never looked back.) avclub.com/week-31-toby-k…

Toby Keith was a conservative (mostly) and uncomfortable jingoistic; but has there been any - any - any indication that he was a racist? Or do we just lazily make that assumption now about a hundred million of our neighbors?

everyone always says “look at the lyrics of Born In the USA”! … but the song uses happy-sounding major chords and an uplifting progression … it’s no surprise that people treat it as a patriotic song … and frankly they are right … the sounds speak more loudly than the words.

Happy birthday to Stevie Wonder, who is *only* 74 today. An all-time great, who wrested himself free from the Motown formula in the '70s to become one of the most visionary (pun very much intended) R&B composers of the era. He goes up there w/these guys: youtube.com/watch?v=EnNgAS…

I am extremely excited to tell you all that I joined Discord & Rhyme Podcast to discuss one of the most personally important albums in my life, R.E.M.'s Automatic For The People. It's a heartfelt discussion that discusses the album song-for-song (like it deserves): discordpod.com/listen/140-rem…

I really cannot explain how happy I was to be asked to guest on this Discord & Rhyme Podcast episode, because although they (most of whom I've known since forever) didn't realize it, AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE meant more to me as an album as a kid than nearly any other: discordpod.com/listen/140-rem…

Calley was a monster. He deserved to hang for what he did. Privately Nixon didn’t like it much but he gave Calley an out for pure politics, thus poisoning the country against everybody who served there. I certainly will never defend it, not even in character. There’s no excuse.

Reminder that William Calley, the only man convicted for the My Lai Massacre in 1969, was the tribute of “The Battle Hymn of Lt. Calley”, a song which sold one million copies within 4 days after release in 1971.

The death of William Calley means it's time to remember Hugh Thompson, the man.who tried to stop the My Lai massacre. Not Calley, one of the men who perpetrated it and largely escaped punishment for his war crimes. Doing the right thing is always a choice.

It is my hope that as this man approaches the heavenly gates with even the slightest expectations, Hugh Thompson Jr. and his crew once again land their helicopter in front of him, whereupon Calley turns crisply on his heel and goes straight to hell.

I've known this song for 26 years, but really only reconnected to it a year or so back. I am convinced that, despite its relative obscurity (musos may know it), it's one of the most beautiful songs written on an acoustic guitar. Competes with McCartney. youtube.com/watch?v=gIyPrj…

I wrote a new book! If You Try Sometimes...: Listening to the Rolling Stones is about every song the Stones recorded in the studio (plus everything Mick and Keith recorded, too). It's a deep dive that this great band deserves. I hope you check it out! a.co/d/9Cy12yX
