I’m completely covered in paint, the whole kitchen smells of paint, and it’s very clear that I’ve been painting for two days. 11-year-old son asks, while staring endlessly into his phone, “What you been up to today?” Adolescents live in absolute bubbles.

I just told my mum that recent blood tests showed my iron levels are too high and that red meat, shellfish, alcohol and vitamin supplements can make them worse. “You best cut down on vitamins then, sweetie.” 🤣

“Dad, can you make my breakfast because it was my birthday yesterday?” “You birthday literally couldn’t be any further away now, so today you’re back to making your own.”

Started watching Game of Thrones ten years ago and just finished it this afternoon. Been busy.

Having to sew my son’s blazer this evening reminds me of the time my mum pinned a hole in the crutch point of my trousers and then forgot the finish the job with a needle and thread. I’ll never forget the pain in biology (you could make it up) the next day.

It’s baffling how impatient some adolescents are for things they want until they are tasked with fulfilling the need themselves. Then it never really needs sorting.

It can take a really long time to make change happen and I know how hard everyone behind this worked in the name of bereaved families. I’m absolutely delighted for everyone involved. Amazing dedication to the cause.

“Dad, we’re watching Romeo & Juliet at school, and I cried when Mercutio died.” Excellent. He’s engaged in literature, sensitive enough to appreciate the drama, and actually talking to me about school for one. “Oh, and Dad, Juliet’s fit!” 🙄
