This day 1848 saw Haworth Parsonage mourning Emily Bronte who died a day earlier. Emily's attitude to life, and death, is found in her masterful poem The Old Stoic. Its closing words "with courage to endure" are on the Bronte memorial in Westminster Abbey's poet's corner.

Still remembering Emily Bronte, as always at this time of year. Here, in Haworth Parsonage, is the couch upon which Emily died on this week in 1848.

#otd 1855 Tabby Aykroyd, long and faithful servant at Haworth Parsonage, died. Just two months later her beloved Charlotte Bronte, whom she had nursed and worked for since childhood, also passed away. Tabby's tales fired up the imaginations of the young Brontes.
