I've just discovered that Amber Patrick, whose book I mentioned earlier in the day, will be doing a short talk in Thetford, on 11th June, looking at East Anglian Malthouses. Just got my ticket - £5 🙂 artfund.org/explore/events…

In fifty-odd years of life, I've done a lot of things, only recently focused squarely on beer. Yet in those decades, from adolescence to a moment in the bowels of Greene King, no matter what I've done, beer has never been far out of frame. beervanablog.com/beervana/2024/…

Sad to see that Dr Ray Anderson has died. A lovely chap who worked at BRI in the 70s and then Allied Breweries in Burton. Worked on esters and sulphur compounds in beer + great papers on brewing history - doi.org/10.1002/j.2050… -and a leading light in breweryhistory.com

David Quain Such a sad loss. His history of the @IBDHQ is an absolutely brilliant book and anyone interested in the history of British brewing should read it.

Who was the luckiest Victorian ever? It would be hard to beat Alfred Barnard, who toured 162 distilleries between 1885-87 and wrote a book on whisky distilleries of GB and Ireland. He then went on to tour 110 breweries (1889-91) and published a four-volume book on breweries.

Academic publishers are never cheap. So I don't expect you to rush to buy a copy, at $75/£59. But it IS the complete history of porter and stout, it took 5 years to write, 300,000 words, out in November and I think it's worth every red cent. But I would… mcfarlandbooks.com/product/Porter…

Lots of work stuff inc the big festival (sorry I didn’t get to say hi to everyone it was mad in there) but I WILL say that the Nicholas Nickelby in Crouch Hill and it is mint. Amazing beer and Czech style service, highly recommended.

Nigel Sadler Hook Norton Brewery Adnams Southwold Many thanks for the recommendation! And really nice to see it being read in a suitable setting... It's still in print: the publisher's in the US (upittpress.org/books/97808229…) but the usual retailers over here should be able to get it easily enough.

Just published in Notes and Records, a paper about Newton's beer mug! Read about the wooden flagon that Newton is on record as giving to his Trinity College, Cambridge chamber-fellow, John Wickins, which survives intact: royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs… #notesandrecords #twitterhistorians
