All Colbert had to do was tell a political joke or two and have animals come on and do stupid things. Instead he turned his show into a scoldy political finger wagging group therapy hour for self affirming clapping seals.

Tonight’s box score is emblematic of the offense this season: they have 3 elite hitters at the top, and nothing in the middle. They’ve lacked capable, consistent, powerful hitters anywhere 4 through 7. All-Star caliber, righthanded bats don’t grow on trees, but they need one.

At root, the NPR story and the Colbert story are the same: progressives took over a product, made it so that people didn’t want to pay it for it—whether via advertising, subscriptions, or donations—and they’re now upset that it won’t be perpetually bailed out by a third party.
