Hi Janine, just watched the recording, which was really interesting. When I saw your book title, I thought that the name Trautenau was somehow familiar. Yesterday, I checked my dad’s USC Shoah Foundation interview and there it was. He confirms that his sister Fela survived in Trautenau.
Thank you Slovak Embassy UK for commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Vrba-Wetzler escape with His Excellency Dr Róbert Ondrejcsák, Jonathan Freedland, AJR CEO Michael Newman, Julia Sherwood, Hannah Janulewicz, Dr Dr Bea Lewkowicz & Dr Martin Korčok, Director, Holocaust Museum, Sereď.
Thank you Slovak Embassy UK for hosting a wonderful event at the embassy yesterday together with the The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) Grateful to have been able to share my memories of Wetzler and Vrba, as part of a distinguished panel, Jonathan Freedland, Dr Martin Korcok, Julia Sherwood and Hannah Janulewicz.
Shocked to hear that the amazing Hella Pick CBE died. I was fortunate to have been able to interview her for AJR Refugee Voices Archive and on other occasions. We had planned another interview in May. Together with Alf Dubs and The Association of Jewish Refugees (AJR) Michael Newman in Berlin, January 2024. RIP Hella.
Looking forward to marking the 80th anniversary of the amazing Vrba/Wetzler escape. Panel discussion will be hosted by Julia Sherwood.
On #WorldPoetryDay2024 I would like to share Hans Seelig‘s poem called ‘The Refugee‘. Hans left Germany on a #Kindertransport to Sweden in March 1939 and when I interviewed him in 2001 he recited it for me.
The #memorymarch ended at the Old Railway Station, where the major of #Thessaloniki , Stelios Angeloudis, and the president of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, David Saltiel, addressed the audience.
Victoria was saved by a Christian couple, her parents Esther and Samuel Monina were deported to #auschwitzbirkenau . Only her mother returned and in 1947 she married another survivor, Chaim Nahoum, who became the caretaker of the new Jewish cemetery in #Thessaloniki .
Honoured to have taken part in the #MemoryMarch in #Thessaloniki . Together with my friend Victoria Benousilio, one of the last survivors, who was present today. I recorded her story in 1994 and today.
Great to be back in Thessaloniki with my colleagues Leslie Hakim-Dowek and Jay Prosser who are interested in exploring traces of Jewish memory.
