Again, he responded with statistics that are completely at odds with what’s available from CIHI. With this kind of unchecked spending and a void where results should be, there’s a question of HOW money is being spent - not of how much.

So today in Question Period I followed up, and asked him about whether any improvements to health care have come from the >$200 million that has been added to administrative spending under his watch.

According to CIHI’s 2023 “Series D3” data table, B.C. is tied with Saskatchewan for the second-highest portion of public healthcare spending going to administrative costs of all the provinces, at 2%. The average across the provinces is 1.87%.

Turns out, the numbers don’t match. B.C. has some of the HIGHEST percentages of healthcare spending on administrative costs across all of the provinces (excluding the territories) – not the lowest.

Minister Dix told me that B.C. has “one of the lowest administrative costs in the country,” but that didn’t line up with what we’ve heard from healthcare professionals. So we checked his numbers with data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).

Last week in budget estimates, I asked the Health Minister about the ratio between front line healthcare workers and administrative staff.

I’ve heard from constituents and healthcare workers that health administrations continue to grow, but access to care hasn’t improved.

We owe it to every worker, past and present, to ensure they’re protected from harm.

It took 50 years between us knowing the risks of asbestos and banning it; it cannot take govt that long to address other risks, like PFAS in firefighter gear, or a workers’ right to clean air.

To reduce public drug use and solve the toxic drug crisis, we need to repair the social safety net.
