Definitely think this can be true sometimes. But I'm more willing to ascribe the growing unconsciousness of our culture -and therefore the growing high strangeness of it - as a byproduct, rather than an intentional act (see, e.g., the decline of Google Search).

This whole incident really bothers me, for a range of reasons, but it should really bother everyone: There's a tranche of STEM that's reflexively anti-ethics. This isn't a new problem; we saw it throughout the 20th century. That's how we know the consequences are horrid.
