Third night on Selvagem Grande. Target species : Puffinus baroli. None heard and none seen. Just Cory's shearwaters and one Bulwer's petrel but we have new ideas for next night. Great support from the IFCN Madeira warden Manuel Jose !Muito Obrigado !

Selvagens is the only place in the world where Cory's shearwaters arrive in the colony in daytime. A new experience for a night photographer.

Fifth night : only heard 6 Puffinus baroli between 04:00 and 07:00 when there was no more moon. Population seems to be dramatically low. And on the cameras : two Bulweria bulwerii and 2 Calonectris borealis

Sixth night at Selvagem Grande. Cory's shearwater festival. Landing and circling birds all around me. An incredible number of nocturnal pictures ! Just one and a crop to show the detail.

The night of Hydrobates castro on Selvagem Grande. Full moon will be in a few day's time but the nights are already very bright. Second night I hear a few gulls in the air

It took three nights to find the birds, understand when they arrived and how high (or rather low) they were flying and finally to make this picture of Hydrobates castro landing at night at its nest in the wall. The 11th consecutive night in the field on Selvagem Grande.

Still no Puffinus baroli. No calling birds, nothing seen. But great pictures of Cory's shearwaters and Bulwer's petrels. Only one night left to find baroli ...

You may have wondered what I did in daytime on Selvagem Grande. This is the only colony in the world where Cory's shearwaters go to their nests in daytime. A big lens, a bit of patience and several thousands of birds in the air. The only problem : select the right one !

"Petrels by Night" at the 7th IAPC at Ensenada, Mexico. Great news : I have been invited to present the results of 12 years of nocturnal in-flight pictures of west palearctic tubenoses. 30 Min - 21st of May (from behind my computer at home in Belgium). More info will follow.

Petrels by Night on Ellidaey Island (South Iceland). We spent the last three "nights" (it never gets really dark up here in "summer") on the top of Bunki, surrounded by Leach's Storm-petrels. Fabulous to see them flying around at breakneck speed. No IR photos possible here.
