Never need to do ferret trials again? Data from 125 contemporary IAV (H1, H2, H3, H5, H7, & H9 subtypes) in ferrets fed into machine learning to show models can summarise outcomes : lethality, morbidity, transmissibility. 👉nature.com/articles/s4200…

In May I wrote about researchers' plans to infect cows in high-security labs with avian influenza #H5N1 to better understand the infections and how easily the virus is transmitted. The results from two of these experiments are now out here in a preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

A systematic review on current approaches in bat virus discovered between 2018-2022. A total of 72 new viruses from 19 virus families were discovered from bat species between 2018-2022. New viruses were described from only 45 out of over 1,400 bat species. And 8 out of 18

Seems like the suspected #Ebola outbreak in DRC is not Ebola. Thank the heavens. 11 suspected cases have tested negative for Eboba, Marburg, CCHF, Lassa & yellow fever. 8 tested positive for malaria and one for dengue, per a World Health Organization (WHO) contact.

science and fun 🧵: Our study of 🦇🦠🇻🇳 has been published. Many new genomes: 32 SARSCoVr, 4 SARSCoV2r, and 2 recombinants of SARSCoVr and SARSCoV2r (RecSar), a spike protein closely related to that of SARS-CoV-2, evidence of co-inf with 4 different CoVs doi.org/10.1111/mec.17…

This study further supports the origin of #SARSCoV2 from the northern Indochina subtropical forests. coronaviruses are highly prevalent in Rhinolophus bats, we report 11% positivity overall.

Nice paper on the modular nature of bat sarbecoviruses in horseshoe bat species - many more viruses discovered in Vietnam (and elsewhere in SE Asia). One bat was infected by 4 distinct CoVs. Gabor Kemenesi onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/me…

Exciting discovery! 🌊🔬 A bacterium found in a marine sponge from the Great Barrier Reef shows remarkable similarity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the pathogen responsible for TB. These findings inform future research & treatment strategies 🌍💡doherty.edu.au/news-events/ne…
