He will be celebrated for his books and films but it was during his tenure as a CEC member that #wildlife took centre stage in policy .. Err Nitin Sethi would respectfully disagree . most of us in our pieces have written about the top down conservation approach followed by him and our Obits reflect that including jay mazoomdaar so no one has sung blind praises . Can’t paint everyone with the same brush

Thapar loved Tigers and Ranthambhore, but he sat though long CEC hearings, over tons of paper in Nehru Stadium to save the last wild areas. He was instrumental in saving not only Kudremukh but also had an important role in the CEC report against mining in Niyamgiri Hills, Orissa.

Thapar's other contribution was the Ranthambhore Lecture Series from 1995 onwards. Every month some of the most passionate people working on conservation would be invited to speak at IIC every month. He would always speak his mind : till the last he opposed the Cheetah Project ..

Bahar Dutt The Quint If there is one person to credit for the strong CEC report on mining in Niyamgiri in 2005-2006, it is Valmik. Hearing after hearing, he would howl at the lawyers defending the project saying profit cannot be at the cost of forest. His voice was enough to scare everyone around!
