I think the fact all clerics in modern DnD have access to the all cleric spells is a loss. Why is a cleric of the god of doorways as mechanically good at augury as a cleric of the god of knowledge? Any (home-brew) rules to get around this issue? Or is it for RP to handle?

If level drain is a bit much, how about enemies or traps that take away hit dice or spell slots? They get those back, but the short term challenges go up.
