Anyone can enjoy #Astronomy by looking up at a clear night sky, with a quick glance at our nearest spherical satellite, the Moon. The #Moon orbits us & its cresent shape🌙 is due to sunlight reflecting off its surface so it depends on the positions of it, the #Sun & us on Earth.

#Astronomy Terms In A Nutshell #Near Line of sight (not really near) #Magnitude Brightness & the lesser the no, the brighter the object (don't confuse with lumens & flux density that physicists use as astronomers use a different system) #Degrees Angle in sky (not temperature)

The most obvious object to observe is the Moon. Depending on its phase, half or full Moon as an example, it can be spotted easily using naked eye 1st. After that, there are the planets of the solar system. Using naked eye again, their differences can be spotted by their colours.

Astronomy is inspiring & informative. Apart from the daytime star, our Sun, the night sky might appear to only be sprinkled with sparkling white dots but they're a mixture of local planets, stars & galaxies all in deep space. Amongst stars, other events on massive scales occur.

Hot science on a cold dwarf planet: Ceres may be cold now, but new research suggests it once had a lasting source of chemical energy. When combined with the briny water and carbon molecules found in its interior, Ceres may have been habitable. go.nasa.gov/45X1KSO

To the #Astro community out there: I chose the location of this house because of its darkness. So if any of you want this winter to escape the city to do some astrophotography: hit me up!

Claire C ζ(s)mith & Bsky/My Website/GooglePhotos⚛️ Indeed it’s quite remote for Flanders: no real light pollution, especially not after midnight when the local Street lights go off as well. And of course, as an astronomy lover myself, will be glad to assist in any matters .

This thread I just did, was really difficult to sort out (& all done via my mobile phone) so if you're interested in checking it out, scroll down from the link below, or start from the top (via the same link below to the same thread), then scroll down the thread. Worth a look! ->

🌑 This Sunday evening (7 September), a total lunar eclipse or 'blood moon' will be visible from the UK. As the Moon rises above the horizon, around 7.35pm from London, find a high point with an unobstructed view towards the east for a chance of seeing this eclipse at its best
