What I’ve learnt over 29yrs: •MH services are underfunded •People with a mental illness are some the strongest people I know •We don’t support carers enough •Continuity of care is golden •Compassion and authentic hope vital •MH needs more funding #WorldMentalHealthDay

I am happy to conclude my trilogy on Cas9 specificity with our new preprint from the @MartinJinek lab! We solved a staggering number (15!) of crystal structures of Cas9 bound to bona fide off-targets to investigate the nature of mismatch tolerance. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

It's weird to me that people talk about "choosing to leave academia." Many #phds leave b/c they've been insulted, undervalued, underpaid, exploited, and have 0 real options left. Hell of a choice. @academicchatter

I'm not sure who needs to hear this, but giving a mentee space is not: ❌ Ignoring mentee requests for feedback/help ❌ Being unavailable to meet ❌ Dropping the ball on critical deadlines (letters, applications, etc.) 👎 Neglect ≠ supporting independence

I’ve said it before and l’ll say it again, neglect is a form of trainee abuse. If you don’t have the bandwidth to effectively mentor, don’t take trainees. And if you see neglect, don’t say it’s due to busy PIs or big labs - that’s excusing bad behavior & discounting the trainee

I really like this new article on psychological safety (a belief that we can speak up, take risks & make mistakes without fear of being judged, humiliated or punished) at work. It sets out a series of activities/approaches that all of us can use to build psychological safety in
