The Battle of Trafalgar happened #OnThisDay in 1805. And #OnThisDay in 1905, Southampton’s Trafalgar Dry Dock was opened. It was the largest dry dock in the world at the time and it was later enlarged. Last used for ship repairs in the 1980s; since then it has been filled in.

Over 8,000,000 troops from various nations embarked for #WW1 from Southampton. Thousands came back to the port wounded or dying. Many never returned. Millions more embarked in #WW2 and during later conflicts. Remembering them all today. #RemembranceSunday #WeWillRememberThem

I understand there are financial pressures but this saves next to nothing (in Govt terms) but will have a huge impact on so many. Cadet Forces offer a fantastic opportunity for young people and we should be encouraging more to join, not cutting the funding.

Victoria Road, Woolston. The London Arms (on the right, on the corner) dated back to the 1870s but it was bombed in 1940. The 1950s replacement closed in the early 2000s. The Thornycroft shipyard at the end of the road in the older image was also closed down in the early 2000s.

📣 Help save Llandudno's Queen Vic! The historic bronze bust of Queen Victoria that was situated in Happy Valley has been removed, presumed stolen. The bust is the centrepiece of a monument erected in 1890 to mark the 50th year of the Queen's reign. 🧵 #heritage #cymru #Conwy

Over two million American soldiers passed through Southampton during WW2 to help liberate Europe from the evil tyranny of fascism. Paul Shimer, seen here with the mayor, was the ‘Millionth Yank’ to head off to war from the port. Sadly, he would be killed in action in April 1945.

So very sad to hear the news this evening. He was so very generous with his incredible knowledge and made us all laugh. I first met him when we filmed flog it in the Isle of Wight and he really made me giggle! His passion was infectious - God bless you Mike ❤️
