Takins are native to the high-altitude regions of the Hengduan and Himalaya mountain ranges. All 4 subspecies are found in China. The #takin prefers to inhabit cold, high-altitude areas above 2,500 meters and migrates vertically with changes in season and temperature.

I'm well aware that extrapolating sizes from fragmentary remains highly subjected to allometry is misleading but excuse me holy shit

Most birds use a funny running style: grounded running. It's a paradox: GR costs more energy than normal running, but animals usually minimize costs. Do birds waste energy? We resolve this with a model of the emu (the best bird). 1st PhD chapter, out in Science Advances 1/17

The cranial morphology of Melanosuchus still surprises me every time I see it again. Not only is it incredibly "dense", but the orbital fenestrae are absurdly gigantic compared to those of other crocodilians. #Croctober

If you guys thought the """"neck lock""" interconnecting neural spines of Acrocanthosaurus were cool (left), check out the neck of Taurovenator(right)

I cringed at the atmospheric oxygen mention (Arthropleura itself is exactly one of the strongest counterarguments to that), but this is actually very fascinating.

I'm planning to switch over to bsky. If everything goes well, I'll keep checking here from time to time, but for other interactions see you over there
