My department dropped the Internship category from the Student Excellence Awards this year stating that internships are easy to get stuff and a lot of referrals are there in the market. Students who actually worked in the industry got no recognition at all.

And to top it off, the Patent category seems to have its own rulebook as some students were awarded solely, while others were given Research Contribution tag without justification. When merit becomes subjective there is no meaning of excellence or hardwork.
