Shocked to learn that UC San Diego Library eliminated their marine science librarian position due to budget cuts. How does the UC system expect to sustain quality educational institutions when libraries can't keep librarians? Scripps Institution of Oceanography without a librarian? Absurd.

I understand that many libraries fail at keeping themselves at the forefront & being recognized as indispensable partners in the research enterprise, but for Scripps & UCSD - world leaders in oceanography & marine science - to drop this position? Terrible.

The pandemic should have led to universal health care, paid sick leave, upgraded ventilation in millions of buildings, massive investment in preventive healthcare and ongoing vaccination campaigns. Instead we got $1200 and the impending criminalization of masking.

The value of BHL can't be overstated. I helped a researcher find mentions of a rare radiolarian from an 1898 research cruise & tracked down the original description. This was all in German, so I used the OCR from BHL to translate the text into English, too. 🔥BHL🔥
