If she were wearing something less expensive, people would say she looked cheap. This is the impossible tightrope women have to walk because the β€œright” thing to do is whatever we’re NOT doing.

Shocked to learn that UC San Diego Library eliminated their marine science librarian position due to budget cuts. How does the UC system expect to sustain quality educational institutions when libraries can't keep librarians? Scripps Institution of Oceanography without a librarian? Absurd.

I understand that many libraries fail at keeping themselves at the forefront & being recognized as indispensable partners in the research enterprise, but for Scripps & UCSD - world leaders in oceanography & marine science - to drop this position? Terrible.

The pandemic should have led to universal health care, paid sick leave, upgraded ventilation in millions of buildings, massive investment in preventive healthcare and ongoing vaccination campaigns. Instead we got $1200 and the impending criminalization of masking.

The value of BHL can't be overstated. I helped a researcher find mentions of a rare radiolarian from an 1898 research cruise & tracked down the original description. This was all in German, so I used the OCR from BHL to translate the text into English, too. πŸ”₯BHLπŸ”₯

Curious how digitisation helps unlock collections data? Check out this recent paper written by museum scientists (and lots of digitisers in particular πŸ˜‰). frontiersin.org/journals/ecolo…

This freely available article from Garner et al reveals the many types of data that can be extracted from pinned insect labels, how crucial this data is for research and collections management, and the ways that we are accelerating the data extraction process at the NHM. 🌿

Did you know that Hopkins Marine Station Stanford University has a daily sea-surface temperature timeseries that goes back 125 years? It's true! I took a few photos while I was out taking the temperature this morning. Check out the data at: shorestations.ucsd.edu/about/pacific-…
