Keeping oneโ€™s balance as a writer in the Nigerian literary sphere requires navigating scandals small and large fashioned for distraction. A pretence of political correctness. Fake afro-optimism. Skirmishes exploding every day... Fierce details from Yemisi Aribisala

IBBโ€”a well known despotโ€”is launching a book and getting billions in donations, meanwhile the Ogoni 9 (peaceful environmental activists executed 30 years ago by the regime of IBBโ€™s defence minister Abacha) have still not been exonerated. Nigeria is crazy.

Nigerian leaders have no respect for their citizens. Not one iota. How dare they celebrate IBB? Let him write his memoirs. We will write our own stories and document the kind of president he was. Fund raising, my foot!

No permanent enemies, no permanent friends in Naija politics. Just permanent interests. Even a record of disastrous failures and documented misdeeds can be forgiven. Just write a memoir with a perfunctory, dismissive apology, then gather old "friends" for a fundraising event.

Toronto is a city where poetry hides in street corners. It's not beauty evoking an otherworldly spectacle. It's the world held within those who have learned to blend in. Sometimes, they seem almost like forgotten dreams. Lend me a word for those who wake, only to disappear.

Toronto now carries the weight Lagos used to. The emotional scales haven't tipped, they're now entangled. These two cities' weight displaces my balance. I'm grappling with how to articulate tyat shift, the right words to hold their essence.

I will not clean the poem to impress the tyrant; I will not bend my verses into the bow of a praise song. I will put the symbols of murder hidden in high offices In the centre of my crude lines of accusations. I will undress our land and expose her wounds. --Frank Chipasula.

Our review of jumoke verissimo's, 'A Small Silence' was a delightful experience... We didn't expect to love the book as much we did; it was a literal case of do not judge a book by its cover. The book received an average rating of 3.7/5๐Ÿ‘
