It was great to speak to Sara Herschander about the AI research landscape and how its challenging yet necessary for non-profits to work in the LLM space. Many think we should leave the field to companies, but non-profits have different values and goals and those are important.

To everyone going "but companies do their own testing anyway" -- the private sector cannot test in areas most relevant to national security without gov involvement, because the information itself is classified. Some gov testing capacity is simply required.

Tomorrow is the last day to apply to Open Phil for grant money for an AI/ML project in interpretability, alignment and all the other areas of AI safety in our RFP (see next post). We are very open to applications from non-professors who wish they could run bigger experiments!

Aviya Skowron very short but with central point of focus of tv/radio/newspapers most people never got a shot to release work, but if you did you had people's attention. Still very few made significant income, but there was a clear pass/fail. This is the romantic era. Had its merits.
