'Musical representations of Europe in myth and allegory are well known, but when and under what circumstances did the words "European" and "music" become linked together?' Looking forward to seeing how David R.M. Irving's new #book addresses these points. global.oup.com/academic/produ…

Wranitzky’s ‘Oberon, König der Elfen’ (1789) was a popular #opera in the late #18c. Arrangements like these allowed people to experience it—and other operas—outside the #theatre. While keyboard adaptations were common indoors, those for winds were ideal for outdoor performance.

One of the oldest preserved palace #theatres in Europe is found in Schloss #Ludwigsburg, a residence of the Dukes of #Württemberg. It first raised its curtain on 23 May 1758 and enchanted its guests with its impressive stage technology.

#OTD 1791: the premieres of ‘Habsburgs Meistersänger’ and ‘La clemenza di Tito’. The first was a #melodrama by Weinlig, the second an #opera by Mozart. Both works were designed to celebrate Leopold II’s coronation as Bohemian king, which occurred earlier that day in Prague.

Well hello again, #Leipzig. It is great being back for what promises to be a stimulating conference on #opera, dynastic representation, and #Habsburgs Europe.

#OTD, October 1, 1273 the imperial princes elected Rudolf von Habsburg, a battle hardened 55 years old ruthless warrior as king. Though he was a mere count, without him the Holy Roman Empire may well have vanished and the Habsburg dynasty would never have risen to power. 🧵(1/

#OTD 1790: #Mozart performed a #concert in Frankfurt am Main during the festivities surrounding the coronation of Leopold II. Compared to other concerts at the event, Mozart’s was a relative failure: it was poorly attended and was cut short because hungry listeners wanted lunch.

Has anyone watched this? I’m only halfway through the first episode and I don’t see how this is any different than *the* story of #Mozart that those interested know already. So far it seems tired and rehearsed. Is it worth sticking it through to episode 3? bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod…
