At #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Democracy Now!'s Amy Goodman attempted to question Azerbaijan's Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiev about the country's crackdown on journalists, activists and government critics in the lead-up to the climate summit. He refused to answer.

EPP invited us to a round-table discussion on media freedom. We asked what the party’s position is on the obligation to sanction Israel. The party member chairing the event immediately shut down the discussion and accused my colleague of disruption, with no sense of irony.

It's disappointing to come across these news just after our approval of European Commission College. Ursula von der Leyen push for European External Action Service - EEAS 🇪🇺 budget/personnel reform sheds light on her intention to hog whole #EU's Ext Action. The European Parliament has to be promptly informed about the situation.

Very concerned re the implications: reduced staff = reduced capacity = less at risk journalists get eduardo astudillo support. EU Delegations can play a vital role in defending local journalists and safeguarding a free press in countries around the world. Kaja Kallas Ursula von der Leyen

An overwhelming majority European Parliament has today called for #JimmyLai’s immediate & unconditional release, & condemned the deterioration in the rule of law & freedoms in #HongKong. Thank you to all parties & MEPs who supported this Urgent Resolution. doughtystreet.co.uk/news/european-…

2024 was the deadliest year for journalists in CPJ’s history. Every journalist killed is the loss of a truth-teller. Those who chronicle our reality and hold power to account deserve justice. We will not stop seeking it. Read more in CPJ’s new #2024KilledReport:
