As the Command Module Pilot for Apollo 11 and the first director of National Air and Space Museum, Michael Collins inspired generations of space lovers. His appreciation of beauty and his legacy of spaceflight advocacy will live on in those he inspired. Godspeed, Mike. You will be missed.

Today, we honor the life of Michael Collins. He dedicated his life to service, including as a NASA astronaut and here at the Department, where he served as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs. Michael Collins's legacy of space diplomacy will be remembered.

Michael Collins' humility is captured in the Apollo 11 mission patch. He designed it to represent the thousands who worked toward a lunar landing, not just the astronauts, and it remains one of the only NASA mission patches without the names of the crew.
