It's not quite Aladdin's Magic Carpet, but our Bicentennial Quilt has been doing its best impersonation this past week. The patchwork creation, designed to celebrate the Royal Astronomical Society's 200th anniversary in 2020, traversed the length of the UK for an appearance at Orkney Science Fest.

Have you heard of Steve? 🧐 It's a rare, breathtaking celestial display spotted across the UK recently. While it might look like the Northern Lights, Steve is something entirely different.

Sometimes the night sky is full of surprises. Take the sky over Lindis Pass, South Island, New Zealand one-night last week. Instead of a typically calm night sky filled with constant stars, a busy and dynamic night sky appeared. Suddenly visible were pervasive red aurora, green

Great to take part in #HistDay24 alongside many other specialist libraries and archives at Senate House today - we've had many interesting discussions with researchers about our collections.

The Troughton equatorial telescope was designed in 1789 and was installed at Armagh Observatory in 1795. Amazing survival; it’s thought to be the oldest in the world that remains set in its original dome. Also very difficult to photo well in the confined space! πŸ“Έ own

Tonight we're hosting a behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal Astronomical Society, titled 'A Tale of Two Transits' ✨ The event is sold out, but those lucky enough to get tickets will be shown original documents and photos relating to the main celestial event of 1874 – the Transit of Venus.
