The reposts of this thread are depressing -- a sign that many academics can't read an abstract/Twitter thread without bringing their own biases in. The authors don't find reductions in "lifetime achievement" or "learning" etc. as many reposts claim. What they claim is that

The first PhD student whose dissertation I've chaired is graduating a month from today. They just asked me to be their hooding advisor. I have tears in my eyes. May I never take for granted what an honor it is to be someone's trusted advisor.

Super stimulating interview for Asterisk in which we talk about "Raised to Obey" (Princeton University Press) but also: - is "indoctrination for democracy" desirable? - the problem of "low state capacity" to improve education - student- vs. teacher-centered pedagogies and more!

Following the Civil Rights Movement, while non-Southern textbooks evolved to better reflect Black activists’ curriculum demands, Alabama textbooks largely retained narratives that minimized or erased the history of racial discrimination. Ungated study: tinyurl.com/y32wev8y

BREAKING: MIT just completed the first brain scan study of ChatGPT users & the results are terrifying. Turns out, AI isn't making us more productive. It's making us cognitively bankrupt. Here's what 4 months of data revealed: (hint: we've been measuring productivity all wrong)

Aaaah!! Just learned that "Raised to Obey" (Princeton University Press) has won the 2025 J. David Greenstone Book Prize for the best book in politics and history published in 2023-24. I'm speechless, grateful, and beyond thrilled by this recognition! amazon.com/Raised-Obey-Ed…

Blast from the past! Do you know where else we've seen politicians talk about "bloodthirsty" criminals? In 19th century arguments for deploying schooling to indoctrinate the "bloodthirsty" masses. I show this in "Raised to Obey" (Princeton University Press) amazon.com/Raised-Obey-Ed…

What academic articles/books on the comparative politics or political economy of education published since the 2000s did you find most compelling, interesting, and/or important for others to read? Asking for a friend ;)

Great to see this out! It shows the legacy of what I document in "Raised to Obey": mass education was built more to socialize citizens than to teach skills Even *today*, the study shows, policymakers prefer schools that form dutiful citizens over those that boost literacy

Maybe science benefits from people having strong confidence in their *ability* to discover truth(s), but that's very different from having strong confidence that the truth looks a particular way
