ANORA winning best picture (following Cannes breakouts faring well in that category these past few years) puts the festival in a curious new position ... giving art cinema a platform, while finally being seen as a potential Oscar launchpad. variety.com/2025/film/colu…

Discover the luscious queer classic that redefined how male bodies can be celebrated on screen: James Bidgood's PINK NARCISSUS (the same labor of love/lust that inspired the look of Pierre et Gilles, Charli XCX and David LaChapelle). variety.com/2025/film/colu…

If you were scared about what last night's "second screen" M3GAN experience means for the movies, don't worry. It was a total dud: a half-baked marketing gimmick that didn't seem to convert anyone to using their phones during the film. variety.com/2025/film/colu…

EDDINGTON = about as much fun as a knife to the head. Ari Aster's ultra-cynical & intentionally triggering take on the division, paranoia & hypocrisy wrought (or maybe just exposed) by the pandemic on a once-"great" ghost-town America feels like breathing poison gas for 2½ hours.

We had such a great team of critics covering Cannes this year. Much thanks to Owen Gleiberman Guy Lodge Jessica Kiang Tomris Laffly Murtada Elfadl Siddhant Adlakha Catherine for their eloquence and insights! Here's a roundup of our best of the fest: variety.com/lists/best-mov…

This sounds like a slanted way of encouraging what already happens. For a couple years now, enthusiastic tweets for most studio movies (including those by you, Justin 🔜#TIFF50 #TIFF25) break and get rounded up in gushy "first reactions" reports before the films are shown to trade critics.

I'll be returning to one of my favorite film festivals, Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic, this year. The pandemic really disrupted my fest calendar, and looking forward to old friends & also seeing how things have evolved. (It's the town that inspired the Grand Budapest Hotel.)

I've been waiting for someone to make the case for ALPHA. (At Cannes, every film elicits every kind of reaction, but that one seemed to spark only haters.) Look forward to reading, Devika Girish

I love this line from your piece, which is true (but also the curse of the critic, to whom so many turn for Answers): "I cannot say I understood what exactly happened, but understanding is overrated in cinema."

Between SUPERMAN and THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS, it looks like superhero studios are going retro in an effort to win back the fans. I appreciated that FF stands alone, whatever role it may play in Marvel's world-consuming master strategy. variety.com/2025/film/revi…
