Happy Birthday to our founder, Percival Lowell! Percival was born on this day in 1855 in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied mathematics at Harvard University and was fascinated by astronomy, especially the planet Mars. Percival also set in motion the search for Pluto🎈🎂🔭

On Tuesday, a moon globe made by NASA’s Aeronautical Chart and Information Center (ACIC) in 1969 made its way back to our archives! The ACIC had an office at Lowell Observatory throughout the 1960s that served as an important site for the lunar mapping project🌒

Astronomer V.M. Slipher used this spectrograph in 1912 to observe "spiral nebulae," now known to be galaxies. His discovery that these objects were primarily moving away from us was the first step in determining the universe is expanding. #ArchivesHashtagParty #ArchivesScience
