1/6 Ever wondered how plants know to grow toward light? 🌱☀️ At Prolific Machines, we use a similar concept with molecular optogenetics, harnessing light-sensitive proteins to precisely control cell behavior with light.

Our latest out today nature! We revisit a century-old theory and show that metabolic gradients work hand-in-hand with genetic&signalling instructions to shape the embryo. Glucose isn't just an energy source, it acts as a major conductor of the body plan🍬 nature.com/articles/s4158…

nature.com/articles/s4158… We’re incredibly excited to present our work investigating the role of metabolism in mammalian development, out now in nature showing two state-specific spatiotemporal waves of glucose activity guiding mouse gastrulation

Women lose >90% of their #eggs by their mid-30s, with persistent #DNADamage driving this loss. But why isn’t this damage repaired? Our new work in Current Biology, led by Ninadini Sharma, reveals the causes of high DNA damage in aged oocytes.🧬💥 bit.ly/48e35Ee (1/13)

NEW: Today, I’m releasing a Surgeon General’s Advisory on the causal link between alcohol consumption and increased cancer risk. Alcohol is the 3rd leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., contributing to about 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 cancer deaths each year.

News of the first NIH grant cuts at Columbia medical center have come in. Center grants (including of the diabetes center where I am), training grants for PhD students. PhD students are certainly not the reason for federal budget woes, they are among the most altruistically
