Happy Mother’s Day. My brother and I owe a debt of love and gratitude that we could never repay to our mother. She is proud of us both, but we are more proud to be her sons! I miss my grandmother today as well. Lifting up her name and her love today.

While taking my sons to the downtown library this morning, we happened upon a very insightful and informative exhibit on Palestinians in Nashville and important history and culture of Palestine. It’s important for me to research and learn more give the current state of affairs.

We who stand for justice and truth leading to reconciliation must keep fighting. This decision, presented as “heritage,” actually misrepresents the historical truth. We will continue to push for equity and equality to improve this country for everyone.

It has been a privilege to serve on the Steering Committee for the Nashville Partnership for Education Equity Research with Vanderbilt. Today’s symposium highlighted the work that multiple Metro Schools committees have been working on. System(s) change work. Kudos to all.

When the elders speak, we should sit at their feet’s to listen, learn, and reflect. A blessing to hear these words from an elder who once was a scared little girl who first integrated Nashville’s schools. Courage and conviction I aspire to acquire.

This morning it was an honor to learn more about Nashville’s education history. A book and plaque about the last living teacher of Hattie Cotton School during the 1957 bombing was shared. I spoke with 90 year old MaryAnne MacKenzie about her experiences. The past repeats itself.
