σ-bonding pattern in Bi4(4+) is truly intriguing! Three MOs (B2u,Ag,B1g) interfer in a way that disrupt coherence in the entire Bi4 ring but not in the Bi3 subunits. So, is it really the four-membered σ-aromatic ring or two three-membered σ-aromatic "rings" fused together?

Excellent paper, congratulations! Those systems are very hard to model at DFT as the topology of d-orbital conjugation differs depending on XC used. Anyway, EDDB confirms delocalization and potential aromaticity.

nature.com/articles/s4155… - The C5 ring inside seems to have rather well localized pi-bonds and the positive charge stabilized via resonance by one of the C6F5 rings. Not a bad way to avoid antiaromaticity, isn't it? ;-)
