George W Bush doesn’t get enough hate for letting the assault weapons ban expire. One of the more destructive domestic policies in recent memory, with a direct causal link to the last 20 years of increasingly frequent and deadly mass shootings.

This is so incredibly dumb and what Rohan Grey, myself and others have feared this whole time. Budget cuts for the sake of them won in hostage taking is politically and economically disastrous.

Anyone who thinks the Biden administration/future Dem admins will be able continue to govern stably without eventually having to choose between ignoring the federal courts or completely capitulating to the Trumpists they are deluding themselves.

The answer is pretty simple honestly. The "No Negotiation" standpoint, was only viable if it was established that the admin had a backup in the event of no hike. But I didn't see many Hill Dems (or their allies in the media) normalizing the eventual use of a backup option.

Who could have possibly known we'd be in this situation in time to prepare??

What happened to The White House's insistence that it wouldn't negotiate on the debt ceiling?

Now that The White House has indicated 1) It will negotiate over the debt ceiling 2) It has no backup plans 3) A default would be a disaster Is there any limit on what the House GOP should aim for here, concession-wise?

Basically, the Congressional GOP's brilliant plan to save the government is to make 50-54 year-olds who need SNAP benefits now prove that they're working (which in practice means kicking a lot of working elderly ppl off food stamps because they can't meet paperwork requirements)
