1/📢 Exciting News! Using newly sequenced sea catfish genomes, we analyze signatures of selection across three major ecological axes within this clade. Our findings identify a heightened incidence of positive selection in marine-derived freshwater lineages. 🌊➡️🐟 #genomics

Why do seahorses, goatfishes, dragonets and flying gurnards evolve differently across oceans? 🌏🐟 A new study led by Scripps researchers reveals that colonization dynamics drive the decoupling of species richness and morphological diversity. Dive in: journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/73…

I'll be at my first #SICB2025 next month with some cool 3D printed fossil fish jaws to hype up my talk on Jan 7 at 1:30pm entitled "Patterns of jaw diversification in early bony fishes." Come say hello!!

Researchers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography and NOAA conducting routine sampling off the coast documented ash extending 100 miles offshore as the #Palisades and #EatonFires raged. They are now tracking the likely effects of toxics on the marine ecosystem. bit.ly/4aE8eXx

New entrance to the Marine Vertebrate Collection! An amazing mural by Dwight Hwang of California ichthyofauna. Offshore to nearshore, shallow to deep, oarfish and footballfish to sardines and finescale triggerfish. Brought to life by the amazing Birch Aquarium at Sc Exhibits team!

1/8 Excited to share our new paper in Science Advances! We investigated the evolution of endothermy in ray-finned fishes by integrating phylogenomics, ecomorphology, fossil occurrence, and comparative genomics across 205 marine vertebrates. 👉 science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…

The California Blind Goby (Typhologobius californiensis) lives with Tidepool Ghost Shrimp, (specifically Neotrypaea biffari) in their sandy burrows. The goby is endemic to the tidepools of Central and Southern CA as well as the Mexican Pacific shoreline.

The California Blind Goby (Typhologobius californiensis) goes through the normal stages of development; they even have eyes, and some pigment, as young fish. But as soon as the goby has found a burrow or submarine cave of its own, the eyes and the pigment degenerate.

New paper alert! Oceanic islands are great places to study how species evolve and disperse because their ecosystems are small and isolated. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean —St Paul’s Rocks, Ascension, and St Helena— are roughly halfway between South America and Africa
