That exciting time when the records arrive and you haven't yet started to think about the work it'll take to review and process it all 💙 On my desk today: 2 hefty boxes of Eastern State Penitentiary documents c. 1830-1860!

I would be willing to bet that there are some albums in those piles that aren’t actually available to stream anywhere. A lot of stuff isn’t streaming, and stuff often vanished from streaming platforms. Also, I appreciate that this features a shoutout to Oingo Boingo.

Colonial newspapers contributed to the perpetuation of slavery. Advertised 250 years ago today: “RUN AWAY ... a NEGROE slave, called CATO ... broke into a house in York-Town, and stole from, thence upwards of Ninety Pounds.” (Pennsylvania Gazette 10/28/1772)

The centre stone of an archway is the KEYSTONE. The two curves either side of the keystone are called HAUNCHES. The inner surface of an arch is the INTRADOS. The wedge-shaped stones from which an arch is built are called VOUSSOIRS. The two lowest voussoirs are called SPRINGERS.

It's #HistoricBridgeAwarenessMonth! Photographed in 1930, this stone eagle was placed on top of a stone pillar located at the western edge of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Bridge, also known as the State Street Bridge, in Harrisburg. A duplicate was placed across the street.
