LaVerne Williams, April 1970 with February 1971 ad from The Tiger. LaVerne Williams was one of the first three Black women to graduate from Clemson. Her first job was director of the Clemson Day Care Center. She was a local educator and guidance counselor for more than 40 years.

Today is 371st Regiment Day in South Carolina, in honor of the highly decorated World War I regiment made up primarily of Black soldiers from SC. Several Clemson employees served with the 371st, including James Alams, who was wounded in action in France. (image: Natl Archives)

A photo of the 1922-23 Textile Society includes two of Clemson’s earliest international students. Yukata Tsukiyama from Japan (top row) graduated with a B.S. in Textile Engineering in 1924. A.D. Muthiah (2nd row) from India graduated with a B.S. in Textile Industry in 1923.

Ethel Rochester from Walhalla, SC was one of 7 women enrolled in special courses in welding, machine shop and blacksmithing through Clemson's School of Engineering in 1942. The women were training for factory jobs to fill labor shortages during World War II. #WomensHistoryMonth

Clemson students built a replica of the Confederate submarine CSS Hunley for the Civil War centennial in 1961. The Hunley was the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat. Today, the replica is on display in the South Carolina State Museum.

Farmers Hall on the Village Green in Pendleton, 1958. At that time, the post office was on the lower level. In the late 1860s, Pendleton Farmers Society president Thomas Green Clemson spoke in Farmers Hall about his idea of creating an agricultural college.

#OTD 100 years ago, Clemson’s fifth president, Walter M. Riggs, dies. Riggs is credited with establishing Clemson as one of the leading land-grant institutions during his tenure as president, and also coached it's first football team in 1896.
