As we approach September 30 - Orange Shirt Day/National Day for Truth and Reconciliation - we’re seeing a predictable but still concerning rise of racist, hateful residential school denialism. As an expert on denialism, here are some resources to help identify and confront it 🧵

First, to be clear, residential school denialism is *not* the open denial of the IRS system's existence, but rather *denialism* is an attempt to twist, distort, or misrepresent basic facts to shake public confidence in truth and reconciliation: theconversation.com/truth-before-r…

There are many common talking points that denialists will use, over and over. Their intent is to discredit Indigenous Peoples and foster anti-Indigenous hatred helpful in protecting/preserving the colonial status quo – and the power, privilege, and profit they derive from it.

But, as Michelle Cyca notes, denialism is alluring to many more people, especially on the far-right, who are deeply invested in colonial mythology as part of their own identify/legitimacy as settlers, so that is why it is important to discredit: thewalrus.ca/residential-sc…

In terms of confronting denialism, it is important to know that denialists target certain times of year, e.g. September 30, to push their misinformation and try and catch people making mistakes – to gain traction, as Niigaan Sinclair and I have pointed out: thetyee.ca/Opinion/2023/0…
