The Imrei Emes admired Rav Kook, whom he described as Ish Ha-Eshkolot, "A man who contained everything." On one of his five interwar visits to the Land of Israel, he raised his concern over the behavior of the irreligious chalutzim. Rav Kook answered him: "The Holy of Holies

3 Elul: R'Avraham Yitzchak HaKohen Kook, HaRav (1865-1935). Rav in Europe, Yerushalayim & ultimately Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Eretz Yisrael. Founder of Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva. Prolific author, posek, thinker & leader who is considered the father of the Religious Zionist movement.

3 Elul: R'Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz (1886-1948). Rebbe & Menahel in Torah Vodaas. Founded Torah Umesorah with a goal of setting up day schools in every major city in America. In his later years he founded his Beis Hamidrash l’Mechanchim in Monsey, NY.

3 Elul: R'Avraham Tzvi Eisenstadt of Byelostok (1813-68) Author of Pischei Teshuva on all 4 sections of Shulchan Aruch, an organized summary the psakim of the Rishonim & Acharonim. Also authored Pirchei Teshuva & Nachalat Shiva.

4 Elul: R'Meir Simcha HaKohen of Dvinsk, the Meshech Chochma (1843-1926). Rav of Dvinsk for almost 40 years (at the same time as the Rogatchover Goan). Author - Meshech Chochma on Chumash & Ohr Sameach on the Rambam.

6 Elul: R'Gershon Shaul Yom Tov Lipman HaLevi Heller, The Tosfos Yom Tov (1579-1654). Learned under the Maharal & the Kli Yakar. Rav in Prague & later Crakow. He was a prolific writer, authoring close to 50 sefarim, most notably the Tosfos Yom Tov on Shishah Sidrei Mishnah.

6 Elul: R'Shimshon Chaim Nachmani, the Zera Shimshon (1706-78). Rav of Modena, Pisa, Sayna & Reggio, Italy. Author of Toldos Shimshon on Pirkei Avos & Zera Shimshon on Chumash. He writes that his only son died during his lifetime so he wrote Seforim to perpetuate his own memory.

6 Elul: R'Yechezkel Sarna, the Chevroner Rosh Yeshiva (1890-1969). Talmid of the Chafetz Chaim & the Alter of Slabodka. Established a branch of Slobodka Yeshiva in Chevron, Eretz Yisrael. Head of the Vaad HaYeshivos & member of Agudas Yisrael & helped establish Chinuch Atzmai.

7 Elul: R'Reuven Margulios (1889-1971). Author of over 50 books & sefarim, many of which are very unique including Malachei Elyon (an encyclopedia on angels), Margoliyos HaYam (on Maseches Sanhedrin), Nefesh Chaya (on Shulchan Aruch), Nitzotzei Zohar (a commentary on the Zohar).

Under appreciated Jewish scholar. On my short list of Jewish leaders that deserves their own book. May his memory be a blessing.

9 Elul: R'Tzadok HaKohen Rabinowitz of Lublin (1823-1900). Talmid of the Mei HaShiloach of Izbhitz & R'Leibele Eiger & ultimately became Rebbe after R'Leibele's petira. Prolific writer whose works made an enormous impact. Author of Pri Tzadik, Resisei Layla, Tzidkas HaTzadik etc.

10 Elul: R'Yitzchak Friedman, the 1st Bohusher Rebbe (1834-96). Son of R'Shalom Yosef of Sadigura (Today's Yahrtzeits tomorrow) & the oldest grandchild of the Ruzhiner. His father was niftar when he was 16 so he was cared for & educated by the Ruzhiner himself. Rebbe in Bohush, Romania.

10 Elul: R'Pinchas Shapira of Koritz (1728-90). One of the close talmidim of the Ba'al Shem Tov. Leader of a large community in Meiropol, Koritz. Rebbe of many Admorim of the next genneration of Chassidus. Author - Nofet Tzufim & Imrei Pinchas (Hashalem).

11 Elul: R'Avraham Yaakov Friedman, the 1st Sadigerer Rebbe (1820-83). 2nd son of the Ruzhiner & son in law of the Beis Aharon. He had immense influence on all aspects of Jewish life in Russia, Galicia & Poland. Torahs collected in Knesses Yisrael, Irin Kaddishin & Ner Yisrael.

Tonight, 12 Elul, marks the 56th Yahrzeit of מרת פעסא בת ר' ישראל ע"ה Mrs. Jennie Miller Faggan a"h She supported and enabled over 40 of the primary Yeshivos of previous generations to exist. Today’s yeshivos are "descendants" of the ones she supported and once again many of

12 Elul: R'Simchah Bunim of Peshischa (1767-1827). Talmid of the Chozeh MiLublin & the Yid HaKadosh etc. Rebbe of the Kotzker, the Chidushei HaRim & the Izbhitzer etc. Author of Kol Simchah. His teachings place strong emphasis on introspection & intense Torah study.

13 Elul: R'Yosef Chaim of Baghdad, the Ben Ish Chai (1832-1904). World renowned Sefardi Posek & Mekubal. Followed his father & grandfather as chief Rabbi of Baghdad. Author of over 100 works, most famously the Ben Ish Chai on Chumash (interwoven with Halacha) & Rav Pealim.

13 Elul: R'Avraham Yechiel Fish (1998). A Holocaust survivor who was known to be a tremendous Tzadik, Ba'al Chessed & Mekubal. Known at the 'Bone HaKadosh', the holy builder.
