Students used creativity, teamwork and problem solving while exploring basic engineering principles in a STEM activity, using toothpicks and marshmallows to engineer miniature bridges and testing their designs by seeing how many pennies each structure could support.

After reading Andrea Beaty's "Iggy Peck, Architect," Renee Palmer's first and second grade students were challenge to build a bridge that can hold the four items presented. When they finished, the students were asked how they built their bridge. The bridges passed their test.
