The centralization of Norse states is an understated factor in the end of the “Viking Era.” With more opportunity to grow in wealth & power at home, powerful Jarls & petty kings consumed Scandinavia in war and exhausted the region with bloody wars trying to expand their power.

Varangian Chronicler Yes, there is a substantial degree to which the Scandinavians succumbed to a sort of "suffering from success" scenario, in which they paradoxically somewhat faded from a reality as a result of... winning, sort of.
