I had another volatile patient today. She was switched to my schedule because the other provider was uncomfortable seeing her. The second I walked in the door, she was shouting threats of all sorts. She was floridly psychotic. Over the next ten minutes, I got her to settle down.

Once, a woman stopped me in the lobby. "I'm sorry, I can’t find the ICU.” I showed her where to go. An hour later, I was called to the room—her husband was dying from cancer. That was the day I decided to treat every person in the hospital as if it were their hardest day.

Learn people's names. Use them. Such a small and simple way to make them feel seen and foster connection. From patients, to nurses, to workers in the cafeteria... I promise it'll brighten your day too.

Sharing my latest column in Becker's Hospital Review. There are significant operational factors - like holding patients in our ED’s - that can really inhibit progress in improving patient experience. beckershospitalreview.com/patient-experi…

An amazing post to start the new year, as we continue working to make things happen, save lives and alleviate suffering. Great insight for any audience — providers, patients, and even non-clinical professionals. Let’s do 2024 — together — and see the impact we’ll have.

It’s rare to enjoy airplane food, but JetBlue’s ham and cheese croissant with Mike’s Hot Honey may be enough on its own to make me book JetBlue flights. So good.

Asking a patient how to correctly say their last name is a subtle way to show you care about them and the details. In Louisiana, we got some weird ones! (I would know...)
