I almost, ALMOST, bought an original film script for the “Guns of Navarone” today. If it had been set in Tunisia I would have paid the £400.

Home of the 1st Army's Main Hospital in Tunisia 1942-43. The nearby village was home to Christain monks whose seminary was taken over by the Army. The monks also had extensive vineyards and farms. There is a tiny Commonwealth War Graves cemetery there today. #Tunisia81

"In the long run neither Libya nor Tunisia could have been held, for the African war was decided by the battle of the Atlantic" Rommel. Correct but disingenuous as it's a common catch-all excuse, used by many Germans, for any Axis military incompetence in WW2. #Tunisia81

Just finished reading the official history of Irish Guards in #WW2 #Tunisia. An epic. This is their memorial, now relocated to Tunis but originally erected on Point 212 at 'The Bou'. That battle was a bit like in 'Zulu' - surrounded, hopeless, only just successful. #Tunisia81

Any idea what 'A.K.P.' stands for (it's centre shot on the mast) - and can anybody geolocate the shot, my rough guess is Mateur, Tunisia. 👍

Was this the only SOE wartime romance? Charles Ward met Margaret, in Algiers, in 1943 and they subsequently got married. They both served in the SOE. Previously, Charles had been a Sgt in the Irish Brigade in Tunisia. Margaret passed away in 2019, Charles died last month. #RIP

Most battlefields in Tunisia have been fully cleared of WW2 debris and returned to farmland. But some have been built upon - like at 'Banana Ridge' which now has a four lane motorway from Tunis to Beja going right through the middle. Makes exploration a bit awkward! #Tunisia81

Looking forward to my next visit. When they officially unveiled the memorial in 1957 they had terrible rain, floods and loss of life. fyi Ghassen Rejeb
