As an example, an autistic person may wish to know exactly how many people and who, will be attending the party they have been invited to, so that they can create 'social scripts' to enable them to talk to each person. #Specifics #Details #CopingStrategy #Information #Preparation

Growing up my brother Denny was often called the R-word. It caused him a lot of pain, suffering, and many tears. My hope is that the R-word will go away and never again hurt people with intellectual disabilities. #WordsMatter #KindnessMatters #InclusionMatters

Being too physically close to other people makes me feel anxious. My brain feels bombarded with social and sensory input. I do not have the capacity to think about anything else other than how stressed I feel. #PhysicalSpace #PersonalSpace #Autism #AutismExperience

I do not like change. Sometimes I remain in a less favourable situation because I do not want to cope with changing it. Usually, I sort of 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳. How about you? #Change #Transition #Adjustment #StayTheSame

#Autistic people often have a greater need for personal/#physicalspace than neurotypical people. If you are a neurotypical person, it's important to be aware of this because you may unintentionally be causing an autistic person #anxiety. #personalspace #space #autism

In my #school reports, the #teachers always remarked that I was "very #quiet" and that I "should try to #socialise more". They did not understand that I was #autistic and how #terrified I felt all of the time. They did not understand that I desperately needed #timealone. #Autism

Sometimes it is not the fact that something is 'wrong' that causes an autistic person to feel distressed. They might feel distressed because the thing that is 'wrong' has caused them to feel very confused. thegirlwiththecurlyhair.co.uk/2023/02/16/how… #Autism #Error #Mistake #Attentiontodetail

A #neurotypical person’s brain works #differently. They can interpret a message, and even if the message is a little #unclear, they can still understand what it means quite quickly. They have the ability to understand information even if the information is #vague or ‘#casual.’

It can be terribly #isolating to have a reaction to an ‘ordinary’ #sensation (such as the smell or sound of the grass 🌱 being cut, the smell of a particular drink 🥤 or the hum of the fridge ❄️) that other people do not notice. thegirlwiththecurlyhair.co.uk/2023/09/17/und…

My problems might not even be revealed to the other person, but it doesn't really matter, because they are still FELT by me. Do you have a similar experience as me? #Autism #SocialAnxiety #Communication #Impairments #DisabilityLife

#Autism is an #invisible condition, which means that people can overestimate someone's #abilities. Often people do not realise how difficult it is for an #autistic person to do basic things such as #speak, answer questions, adjust their #routine or manage unstructured situations.

#Autistic people often need #quiet/#predictability. They often like 'input', such as being spoken to, to be planned. They may be far more productive on their own because they do not have this feeling of being on edge in case they are spoken to a noise suddenly frightens them.
