“3, 2, 1, zero, all engines running, LIFTOFF. We have a liftoff, 32 minutes past the hour.” At this precise moment, 55 years ago today, on 16 July 1969, the world heard these words as Apollo 11 was launched to the Moon, for humankind’s first crewed lunar landing. Stay tuned,

A couple of upcoming books from whiteowlbooks.co.uk/space-science I previously had a copy of that third book by the two brothers but gave it away back around 2010 when downsizing my library. Much of the content could ultimately be found online anyway as sites about the Moon proliferated.

After seeing Nick Howes post about the Apollo 11 anniversary, I just want to share a special edition of an old bimonthly IFAS newsletter we previously published. issuu.com/theskybyeye/do…

This came up on a timeline from 7 years ago on this day at DIAS Dunsink Observatory The crescent moon sits serenely between the South Dome and the main Observatory building, with promise of a clear night ahead.

Paolo Palma in Italy: "In these evenings, an extra star shines in the celestial vault." Thanks! ecp.earthsky.org/community-phot… Chi Cygni is a variable star in Cygnus: Sometimes too dim to see with a telescope, but right now you can see it with the unaided eye.

Early riser? You can see two planets, Jupiter & Mars, coming together in the early morning sky over the next week or so. Look low in the east 2am onwards. No telescope or even binocs needed, both look like bright stars to the naked eye. Charts made using SkySafari app.

Definitely circle this in the diary folks. Sometimes it is easy to think the sky is static, but the Saturn occultation, Perseid meteors, the Jupiter-Mars pairing, & some outlying Pleiads occulted on the morning of the 26th means a dynamic month of celestial highlights for August

I spent the last couple of months of 2024 working on this following John O’Neill’s passing last October. I know some people who Sir Patrick Moore mentored in astronomy: John was my mentor starting out and is missed. Here are some selected pages from the finished guide…
