Six yrs ago I happened upon the research of Peter Liljedahl on building thinking classrooms. I applied it to completely change how I taught math for my 5ths beginning w/using visible nonpermanent whiteboards. I’ve shared it for years w/ anyone who would listen! Now it’s a book!

More evidence, if any were needed, that direct instruction needs to be the dominant model of teaching in classrooms, and that enquiry methods can be damaging when they are the default-*especially* to the already disadvantaged.

My 6yo's learning piano. She knows 4 songs that use a grand total of 2 notes. There is no outcry over her needing to learn 'authentic' music. Why is it normal for music, but when we are teaching reading people are opposed to decodable texts?
