@MarkHarrisNYC Your book Pictures at a Revolution is the best source for people who want to understand what Poitier did and thought about it.

"I'll always be chasing you, Sidney. I'll always be following in your footsteps. There's nothing I would rather do, sir." Denzel Washington after winning the Best Actor Oscar for "Training Day" the same night Sidney Poitier received an Honorary Oscar for his body of work.

"Representatives of authoritarians welcomed [Jan. 6]...'The celebration of democracy is over...I say this without a shadow of gloating,' gloated Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachyov. 'America no longer charts the course and has lost all right to set it.'" thebulwark.com/jan-6-changed-…

What's your favorite forgotten movie? Mine is John G. Avildsen's "W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings," which he made with Burt Reynolds immediately before "Rocky." Art Carney plays a preacher-detective and Furry Lewis—THE Furry Lewis—has a wonderful cameo.

Cheril and I paid tribute to Sidney Poitier tonight by watching "In the Heat of the Night." Much of it is preposterous, and Rod Steiger's performance borders on high camp, but Poitier is right-down-the-center fantastic from start to finish—completely real.

So sad. What an amazing person. My husband, Michael and I adored her. She was talented, brilliant, kind, loving, generous and with flawless politics. We send our condolences to Alan and their family and friends.

I am having to reconsider my policy against blocking people on Twitter. Previously, I was all-in for the mute button, but have decided to make an exception for people who tweet reflexive outrage to things they clearly haven't bothered to read.

I just woke up from a nap, looked over at Cheril, and thought: I'm in love! There's nothing I have to do about—I just am! I'm so happy! It feels like I've won a prize. Like this, really: youtube.com/watch?v=Sy4jDt…

Cheril and I just watched William Wyler's 1951 film version of Sidney Kingsley's "Detective Story." Why is the play never revived? Do it right and they'd be on their feet yelling at the end, just like "Twelve Angry Men."
