In the ICU today… Doctor: This patient couldn’t tell us what he would want because he can’t speak. Me: Nah. This patient couldn’t tell you because you were not using the communication board with him. #MedTwitter #CriticalCare #PalliativeCare

I just learned that today is #NationalSpeechPathologistDay. It is a good day to try to reach 1,000 followers. So please follow me if you believe communication is a human right. Or out of pity for not yet having received any messages celebrating #SLP work.

Maybe the patient is not a poor historian. And maybe the one taking the history needs some better communication strategies. #MedTwitter

Decided today that I really need to stop referring to patients as having limited English proficiency. It's ethnocentric, sounds like a deficit, and does not focus on a systemic accessibility requirement. Taking suggestions for an alternative term. #MedTwitter

Communication is a basic human right. For everyone. Everywhere. Even during medical procedures. Especially during medical procedures.

Imagine being in the ICU, on a ventilator, unable to speak - your only means of communication - nodding to yes/no questions. Your ability to communicate hinges on someone asking the specific question you need. Is this truly effective communication?
