I applied for my current role even though I had no marketing experience. But I had research and writing skills, which I use every day. Always apply if you are interested, even if you are not sure if you are qualified, because you never know.

Nobody showed me the elements of effective academic writing. While I tried to learn them on my own, I think that formal instruction, such as a class or a weekly journal club, would be helpful.

This is a reminder that a PhD is a personal transformation, as well as a professional one. While writing a dissertation is a major achievement, it is the person you become in the process that matters.

I haven't stopped growing since leaving academia. Now that publishing isn't my sole focus, I've had some time to think about my work processes.

I'm not a TT academic but I once was. In my first year, I did all the right things - submitted grants, blocked time for research, attended workshops and conferences. But I did too much and burned myself out. Make sure to plan a summer vacation and don't say yes to everything.

Your answer will vary by career stage. As a PhD student, I spent 6+ hours per day working on research, whereas as a tenure-track professor, I only spent up to 1 hour on research during days when I taught classes.

Learning the basic principles of business writing might help with writing reviews. The tone of reviews can be pompous and negative, rather than polite, humble, and constructive. Don't put the authors immediately on the defensive with your review.

I never heard of reverse outlining during my academic career. It works by writing a first draft, then reviewing your argument by summarizing each paragraph and asking how each paragraph contributes to your thesis. It can streamline the revision process.
