A pastor friend of mine was recently asked by a guest at his church, “How did you do this?” Seeing the peace, joy & evident friendliness in the community & observing the wholehearted worship, he was encountering the church as it should be. The light of the world.

We had neither worth, attractiveness, potential for good or hidden undiscovered merit, yet Christ gave his life & endured the most unspeakably painful, shameful death on our behalf. He didn’t get trapped into it but agreed with his Father to endure it while dwelling in glory.

Interesting, the word “friend” (philos) isn’t used among Christians in the NT. “Brothers, sisters, children, beloved” are all used. “Friend” isn’t strong enough to communicate the bond. In using “beloved” we’re reminded that our bond is rooted in God’s prior love for each of us.
